Matt Kelly for Fredericksburg, Virginia City Council

We can continue to complain about the lack of state and federal support for transportation and watch as our roads become more congested, economic development opportunities dry up, and our quality of life declines. Or we can better plan how we develop, and look to multi-modal solutions such enhanced bus and train service. To follow this course we will need to find additional funding to better position our projects for selection.

What Has Been Accomplished:

  • Helped draft regional transportation priorities based on metrics–safety, congestion management, economic development, and cost analysis.
  • Worked to include transit planning in the regional transportation plan.
  • Directly involved in the expansion of VRE services.
  • Involved in FredEx planning (I-95 Improvements)
  • Involved in developing a master plan for the train station.

The Next Four Years:

  • Need to consider establishing a regional transportation authority to generate funding to use to leverage state and federal funding opportunities.
  • Focus on multimodal solutions—trains, buses, and bicycles, to assist in dealing with congestion.
  • Focus on completing efforts to ensure pedestrian connectivity throughout the city.

The future? From my recent trip to Germany. This is Heidelberg with dedicated tram and transit bus lanes. I try to keep up with what other localities are doing to meet their transportation challenges.

The future of transportation is not asphalt. As Fredericksburg’s representative on the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) Operations Board and the Potomac Rappahannock Transportation Commission (PRTC) I was involved in the planning for Transforming Rail in Virginia. Pictured here during the governor’s announcement of the project.

Improvements to I-95 include the addition of CD lanes to separate through from local traffic. Also an extension of the hot-lanes.

Invited to the ground breaking for I-95 improvements and Hot-Lanes extension. Worked on this as the city’s representative on the Fredericksburg Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (FAMPO).

Working on the VRE Operations Board I helped secure the funding for the train station improvements now underway.
